Here they found the woods so dense, and the country so unexplored, that it seemed to them more expedient to return, than to proceed farther. They crossed the country as far as the settlement of Red River, and there encamped. There were with these emigrants the notorious Marc Lescarbot, so often quoted as the source of the story of Virginia, in the Nouvelle Canadienne the late Mr. In the summer of 1813, a party of adventurous persons set out from Montreal to establish a colony, and to cultivate the soil, in this unexplored and wild country. The narrative of the voyage of the first settlers of this colony is probably the oldest, and, as it is often quoted in works on colonial history, may be regarded as trustworthy.
