He had a great passion for life, the sport, the kids he coached and for the University as a whole." Jim had a great energy about him and he always made you feel important. "There aren't too many people who approached life with the same vitality and enthusiasm as Coach Wacker. "We lost a true Golden Gopher today," Director of Athletics Joel Maturi said. Wacker demanded academic excellence of his teams and took Minnesota to the top of the Academic All-Big Ten Team selections three straight years. Wacker, known for his upbeat attitude and fun-loving demeanor, coached the Golden Gophers from 1992-96, compiling a 16-39 record.
Former University of Minnesota football coach Jim Wacker died today at his home in San Marcos, Texas after a long battle with cancer.
